On Self Promotion....

It's such a bummer for me to hear someone "self promote".
Especially those who are Christians.
Why the need to tell others what you've done?
I know it's not an original phrase but,
can't you just do it?

Let's face it nobody did more "awesome" things than Jesus.
He set the example, suppose we follow it?

I'm reading Love Does, by  Bob Goff
Really a great read.
In one chapter he speaks to the fact that whenever Jesus did something great,
you know, like perform a miracle....He always said "tell no one."

Bob Goff says,

"In a world driven by self-promotion and spin, Jesus molded something different for us.
Jesus was saying that instead of telling people about what we're doing all the time,
 there's a better way.
One that doesn't require any capes (like superheros wear) that can get snagged on something--something like ourselves.
Maybe Jesus wants us to be secretly incredible instead.
That was His plan for self-promotion.
Secretly incredible people keep what they do one of God's best-kept secrets,
because the only one who needs to know,
 the God of the universe,
already knows."

~

So rather than talk about it,
just be
secretly awesome.

"Be Awesome"
Bob Goff

Don't you love it!
Be secretly awesome ~ It's what echos from my heart today.

  1. Personally, I think the subject of "self promote" is directly opposite of what God has for us. Vessels are never as significant as what comes forth from the vessel...right? I also like the concept of giving that God instilled...when giving, give in secret. It is all God's anyway, we are just sharing it all.
    Great post!

  2. I am glad you brought up this point, it is quite opposite of what we are seeing today in almost all aspects of life. What we do needs to be "in secret" and not for accolades. Just saying. Have a great day and keep up with the backyard pics. I am waiting with baited breath.

  3. I agree, and while I may be guilty at times I certainly try not to be.

You always make me think, and that's good thing.

  4. My Mother's favorite scripture was: “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”

  6. New to your blog, just read a nice post over at Sallys, so I thought I'd come over to see what she so appreciated today in your writing. I think you will consider me a self-promoter, because I do talk about the volunteer projects I'm involved with, especially on my blog. The reason I do so is not to say "hey look at me, I'm so awesome because I did this great thing for others".... it's to let other people know how they can become involved if they want to join in, how they can benefit from services available, or donate if so inclined, or adopt in the case of our shelter dogs. I also believe if you're doing something great for others, letting others see your example might encourage them to do the same or something similar. Encouraging news instead of all the discouraging news, I hope this makes sense and I haven't offended with my spin on it.

So, just another way to look at the act of letting people know the good things being done.

  7. Promoting a cause is great, I don't see that as self promotion. Super glad you stopped by and really no offense taken :-)
